Golf stories. Who could not tell any? They are about length and birdies. About tournaments and the pros. About golf facilities, the Masters and to set oneself a target.
And then there are heart tourching stories like this one.
After I finished my „Platzreife“ (golf course license in Germany) my biggest wish was to walk over the golf course just by myself. Not only because I felt unsecured but because I was anxious to finally play. Well, this is what everybody wants so I ended up in a nice flight with two guys.
One of them, Rainer, stood at Tee 1 but he had difficulties to do a full swing and drive. I noticed all the time that he had also difficulties walking over the course. My first thought was he had an athletic injury. But when it came to the short game and putting Rainer showed us what he got! At handicap 21 it was obvious that the short game was his strength.
After we played 9 holes ending up in the clubhouse drinking beer I asked Rainer what his walking disability was. You may not believe this but both of Rainer’s legs were amputated below the knees and he was walking on prostheses.
I was very impressed about that. Not only because his physical disability did not keep him away from being a passionate golfer. He compensated his weaknesses with his strengths and held handicap 21.
I have been encouraging minorities of all kinds ever since and it was an affair of the heart when I started Brittigan to set a sign! Not only that the Behinderten Golf Club Deutschland e.V. receives a donation every year (50 Cents of every sold Polo Shirt goes to them) but Brittigan also sponsors the German Championships of the Behinderten Golf Club Deutschland e.V. with golf polo shirts and the saying on the back „handicap – so what?“.
